The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) have announced that the Pulse FM radio frequency, 94.7, would not be re- allocated to the ABC for a Geelong station, but would remain available as a long term community radio frequency. They are investigating alternative options for the ABC.
This brings to an end four years of lobbying by Diversitat and the Pulse. In June 2005, one year after Diversitat commenced operating the Pulse, we applied for a permanent, long term licence. We were the only applicants, however this application was put on hold pending the Government’s decision regarding the roll out of additional ABC stations across Australia. The Pulse was allocated a temporary community broadcasting licence in the interim. Many other community stations have lost their frequencies during this process.
Listen to station manager Gary Dalton talking with Doug Aiton about the announcement.
One of the main reasons behind the ACMA decision was the weight of community support and protest submissions from individuals and groups in the Geelong region that flooded their website. When you need help you find out who your friends are and it seems we have many. It is a testament to the high regard both Diversitat and the Pulse have in the hearts of our community that so many people rallied to support us, from all levels of Government, local, State and Federal to our everyday listeners.
I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Pulse, including our friends at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, and predict a very bright future for our station and the continuation of an independent community voice for our region.
